Stephen Ibaraki, DFNPA, CNP, FCIPS, ISP, ITCP/IP3P, MVP was invited to join the NPA and the board of the NPA in 2004 after being the inaugural recipient of the Award for Professionalism, Career Achievement Award. The award is a partnership of the NPA, Interop Conferences (world's largest interoperability conferences), Pearson Publishing (world's largest educational publisher), Network Computing (CMP), Network World (IDG), Global IT Community Association (GITCA, world's largest computing alliance), Microsoft, Novell, ...and others since 2002. Stephen received this inaugural global industry’s highest honour in 2002 after an extensive and lengthy worldwide search for the best leveraging the reach of award partners Networld+Interop Conferences, Network Computing and Network World publications (the premier and largest publications in the industry sector), and others. As noted in the award citation: "Canadian Stephen Ibaraki took home the highest honor as the recipient of the Best Networking Professional – Career Achievement Award. Ibaraki is chairman of iGEN Knowledge Solutions Inc. and senior faculty/head of research for Advanced Professional Programs at Capilano College. As a distinguished writer and speaker with a career stretching over 35 years, Ibaraki has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Gary Hadford Professional Achievement Award, the highest of international IT awards, presented to him by the Canadian Information Processing Society." "Presiding over this year's NPA Awards for Professionalism were judges Jim Belasco, chairman, NPA board of directors; Chris Setz, president, NPA advisory board; Fritz Nelson, publisher, Network Computing Magazine; and John Gallant, editorial director , Network World Magazine."

The Network Professional Association (NPA) recently presented its 2002 Career Achievement Award for Best Networking Professional ...[Stephen] Ibaraki is chairman and chief architect of iGEN Knowledge Solutions Inc. and senior faculty for the college. As a distinguished writer and speaker with a career stretching over 35 years, Ibaraki has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Gary Hadford Professional Achievement Award, presented to him by the Canadian Information Processing Society. The awards program, which recognized individual excellence in the networking profession across several categories, commenced during an awards presentation ceremony at Networld and Interop, Las Vegas on May 8, 2002. The program was co-sponsored by Networld and Interop and Network World magazine, with support from Network Computing, a CMP Media LLC publication. "It is an honor for the NPA to recognize outstanding professionals such as Stephen Ibaraki, ISP, who, like so many in our industry, works diligently to develop networks that keep mission-critical business systems up and running 24 hours a day," stated Jim Belasco, chairman of the NPA board. The Best Networking Professional -- Career Achievement Award honours a networking professional who has demonstrated the highest level of professionalism and work ethic in the industry, and who has demonstrated a lifetime of outstanding achievements in the network computing industry. This individual serves as a role model in the network computing community and may be considered by peers as an industry luminary. The individual's ethical standards and years of experience are much in evidence in this award. Ibaraki, the inaugural recipient of this lifetime achievement award, contributes his international expertise to many organizations including writing regularly for the Canadian Information Processing Society, News from National publication (www.cips.ca), Xephon professional journals published from England (www.xephon. com), and contributes to the HiTech Career Journal (www.brassring.com). Ibaraki's company, www.igeninc.com, is the world's leading company in database design, developing solutions that enable interoperation with legacy systems, and in developing cost-effective .NET implementations. Ibaraki's makes many worldwide Internet broadcasts with Smartforce, the world's largest e-learning/e-services company. The Canadian Information Processing Society, host for the 2002 World Computing Congress, presented Ibaraki with the prestigious Gary Hadford Professional Achievement Award, the highest of IT awards. He was also inducted into the IT Hall of Fame, included in Lexington's Who's Who for international career achievement, presented the IT Hero Award by ITAC and Industry Canada and the All Star team award by EDS/SystemHouse-Datatech, and named a Top Writer by the Western Magazine Foundation. Ibaraki has been awarded commendations for excellence from hundreds of organizations since 1973. From more than five million professionals, he was profiled globally by Microsoft for his leading role in the IT industry in addition to serving as a certification exam author.

Stephen Ibaraki was awarded as a founding distinguished fellow in 2005. As noted in the citation: "These professionals have been "uniquely" singled out for special distinction out of an estimated 50 million IT workers in business, government, education, and media in more than 100 countries. They are in the Global Hall of Fame for the industry."

Beginning in January 2005, Stephen served a 4-year term as Vice-Chair and in 2005 to January 2010 served as publisher and managing editor of the NPA Journal and as chair of the editorial board. In 2005, Ibaraki was invited to present at the Networld+Interop Conference Las Vegas on strategic planning at the AGM of the NPA. From 2005 to 2010, Stephen also served as chair of the college of distinguished fellows. Stephen continues to serve as a director on the editorial board of the NPA Journal, director on the certification council, director on the college of distinguished fellows, judge for the International Awards for Professionalism and board director of the NPA. His interviews with industry leaders appear on the NPA web site and in every issue of the NPA Journal.

Work outside the NPA

Working with technology since 1965, he is a multiple Hall of Fame Inductee and multiple Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. As the most awarded industry analyst, a few of his more than 100 international recognitions, roles, awards for a lifetime of outstanding contributions are profiled by the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS), where he is a founding fellow. According to the CIPS citation: "The Fellow Membership is awarded to professionals in the Information Technology (IT) sector who have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the profession or industry in Canada. The Fellow is the highest class of membership offered by CIPS and can only be obtained with approval from the CIPS National Board of Directors. Only Fellow Members can nominate an individual for a Fellow Membership." (CIPS is the official representative for Canada to the UN-Founded International Federation for Information Processing [IFIP], the UNESCO consultative body for IT.) Ibaraki also served as Chairman of the National Board and Chairman of CIPS in 2007 and 2008. During his Presidency, CIPS celebrated its 50th anniversary and received this special message from the Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper: "I am pleased to extend my warmest greetings to everyone marking the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS), the professional association for information technology (IT) practitioners in Canada. This special milestone offers a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon past achievements, while setting goals for the future. Since 1958, CIPS has represented its membership on important issues affecting the IT industry and profession. The association has promoted high ideals of competence and ethical practices through certification, accreditation programs, and professional development. I would like to commend CIPS members for carrying out their responsibilities with integrity, expertise and professionalism. Upon receiving his lifetime Advanced Technology Award in 2008, the leader of the opposition, Carole James provided her congratulations by noting, "I am pleased that you are being recognized for you advancements in technology." Premier Gordon Campbell provided this message to Stephen Ibaraki: Congratulations on being honoured for your Advanced Technology Award...you have distinguished yourself in your field of endeavour by promoting pioneer efforts in technology and this award will recognize your considerable contributions with respect to the applications and adaptations of advanced technology to new uses. I commend you for your many achievements and thank you for your commitment to industry excellence. Ibaraki was the opening keynote in 2008 and 2009 for the National Council of IT Deans, where his opening keynote at their summit in the past two years has garnered a unique 100 per cent response rating and increase in enrolment numbers by following Stephen's recommendations.
